A How-To on keeping your skin fresh and radiant in the most humid city in the east coast.

We feel you rolling your eyes, guys — it’s summer time again, and with it: breakout season! Allow us to stop you right there. When it comes to skin care in Miami heat, there’s really no snark needed. This week, we’re facing acne down.  According to Neil Sadick, M.D.,”Excess sweating can lead to blockage of the hair follicles and secondary bacterial overgrowth, causing acne and inflammatory breakouts.” We know summer time brings more than bikinis and margaritas. With all the outdoor activities and product-melting heat, summer means havoc for your skin. But sunny days is not a sentencing for your skin. You can prevent trouble before it starts!

Check out these three ways to prepare your skin so breakouts won’t stand a chance.

1. KEEP IT CLEAN

Washing your skin is as important as brushing your teeth! Don’t. Skimp. Out. Your makeup might hide zits, but it also traps free radicals against your skin. Wash your face morning, night, and after the gym with a cleanser that contains up to 2 percent lactic acid. We like Rhonda Allison’s Pumpkin Cleanser for oily skin – it leaves skin squeaky clean by combining lactic acid and pumpkin extracts to exfoliate and protect your skin from future breakouts. For dryer skins, we like Rhonda Allison’s Beta Green Tea Cleanser. This antioxidant salicylic wash hydrates and freshens skin and enhances the cleaning of problematic skin.

2. DON’T POP YOUR ZITS

It’s so hard not to, we know. But try to resist. Popping your pimples will only result in inflammation, scarring, and yes, more acne. One way to keep skin zit-free is to  carry a small bottle of Rhonda Allison’s Blemish Complex. Pimples pester, especially with all the humidity. Dry them out quick with this benzoyl peroxide cream aimed at clearing acne lesions, leaving skin looking healthy. Always remember to stick to the basics this summer. There are certain ingredients that have proven themselves in clinical trials – benzoyl peroxide or glycolic or salicylic acid for acne – use them. And give them a chance: They need at least six weeks to work. “If nothing has changed by week six, the product will never work for you,” says David Bank, a professor of dermatology at Columbia University/New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Then, it’s time to see an esthetician. Consider a biweekly facial. Acne facials and peels are very effective in extracting the dirt and oils trapped in your skin. Acne treatments help tremendously in the battle for clear and radiant skin!

3. PROTECT YOUR SKIN

Acne products can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage, so be sure to use SPF 30 or higher. Miami is a city knows for it’s beautiful people, pristine beaches, and blistering, scorching heat! What does that mean? Apply, apply, apply. Whip out the sunscreens, ladies and gents. Look for formulas labeled non-comedogenic, which won’t clog pores. You don’t have to sacrifice clear skin for sun protection. Not anymore. We love MD Solar Mineral Creme SPF 30. This lightweight, mineral UVA-UVB creme provides maximum broad spectrum protection all while combating acne.
